Review: British Colonial Hilton, Nassau, Bahamas

The perfect holiday destination needs to have the perfect atmosphere. This is what you get at the 5-star British Colonial Hilton. Located on a private beach in Nassau, Bahamas the hotel boasts of great luxurious facilities that provide the perfect match for holidaymakers. Walking through the front door you immediately get the colonial feel and the huge luxurious lobby with its massive pillars, grand staircase and frescoed ceiling reminded me of a location you’d expect to see Sean Connery’s Bond staying.

The hotel originally opened in 1923 and the architecture of the building retains the feel of that era but also successfully manages to introduce modern flourishes such as the bar and poolside area.

The accommodations are pretty sweet. They’ve got all the amenities you’d expect of a Hilton, and some of the guestroom’s offer clear views of the harbour with its visiting cruise ships and fishing boats. The rooms are fitted with Hilton Serenity Beds that are super comfortable. High speed wifi is available but you have to pay for it.

Outdoor amenities including a swimming pool, fitness centre but one of the highlights has to be the private white sandy beach, accessible only through the property. There’s nothing better than lying on a quiet private beach with a book in hand, overlooking turquoise waters, palm trees and clear blue skies. Added bonus: I was able to pick up the hotels wifi on the beach too!

The hotel is located just a few steps away from some of the best attractions long the beach as well Straw market and Rawson’s Square.

I visited the Bahamas and theBritish Colonial Hilton during the off peak season in September. The resort and Nassau itself is pretty quiet around this time, which was actually perfect. Downtown Nassau did come alive during the day when a couple of the super cruise ships would dock in port and deposit thousands of tourists for the day. Once they left in the evening though, it felt as if I was the only tourist around.

If you’re looking for a relaxing Caribbean escape with character, history and all the luxury and comforts of a 5-star Hilton, the British Colonial is a sure-fire bet.
